the truths that set me free

The sermon at my church this past Sunday was just wonderful.  It was all about the promises we can claim as God's dear children.  It left me feeling refreshed and confident in God's provisions.  And it was especially touching to my heart because many of the verses used in the sermon have been on my memory/meditation list lately.  Click here to listen.

I jotted down all the references (I think) and so I will list the promises below.  I hope you find them encouraging.

Isaiah 49:15, 66:2, 43:2, 54:17
Psalm 34:18, 27:10, 45:11, 46:1, 34:7, 18:28, 147:3, 16:11, 37:4, 84:11
Hebrews 13:5, 10:35
Deuteronomy 33:26
I Corinthians 10:13, 11:31
II Corinthians 4:17
Matthew 11:28
John 6:35
Philippians 4:6
Romans 8:28
Revelation 21:4

I also wanted to list some other truths that I find particularly encouraging when I start to slip into despair.  These are not necessarily Bible verses, but also pieces of songs, quotes, concepts.  I hope they encourage you as well.

... I will not offer the Lord that which costs me nothing ...  2 Samuel 24:24

In God's management of men's affairs, suffering is never senseless.   - Elisabeth Elliot

A cup brimful of sweetness cannot spill even one drop of bitter water, no matter how suddenly jarred.
- Amy Carmichael

You are life, You are life, even death has lost it's sting! Hillsong, Forever Reign

The third thing that I learned was that you, my Lord, never regarded me as I actually was, lame and weak and crooked and cowardly. You saw me as I would be when you had done what you promised and had brought me to the High Places, when it could be truly said, ‘There is none that walks with such a queenly ease, nor with such grace, as she.’ You always treated me with the same love and graciousness as though I were a queen already and not wretched little Much Afraid.”
- Hannah Hurnard, Hinds' Feet on High Places

If we always have everything we long for in this world, we'll be numbed to the deeper and much more eternal longings of our heart.  - Lisa Terkeurst

And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel as it seemed good to the potter to make.  Jeremiah 18:4

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.  Psalm 124:8

These things I have spoken to you that you might have peace in Me.  In this world you will have trouble but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.  John 16:33

In Christ it has been granted to you not only to believe on Him but also to suffer for His sake.  Philippians 1:26

Jealousy comes from counting others' blessings instead of our own.  -found on Pinterest

  1. I was refreshed by that message as well. Isn't it amazing how the word of God is so powerful? I've posted a praise song on my FB page that I think will bless and encourage you. It's by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. It's one of my husband's favorites. I played it for him as he was starting his day.
Here is a verse I often think of when feeling afraid and vulnerable: "The eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms." Deut. 33:27 May you be refreshed and strengthened as you rest in His mighty arms today.

  2. Sarah here are just a few of the things to which I cling. I hope you find some encouragement in some of them.

    1. Pray "between" 'Hallowed be thy name' and 'thine be the glory,' then rest in the God-given outcome and give Him the glory. ~ Dr. Minnick
    2. Isa.40 Right science philosophy and skill cannot confirm, explain or grasp complete understanding of God. Yet he came to seek me! COMFORT from my amazing God!
    3. Grace is the overflow of God's self-sufficiency. It allows me to fully focus on God in order to completely enjoy Him.

    8. I sa 50:10-51:8
    • This is the end of one of the Servant Songs in Isa. and the focus is turned from the Servant/ Christ to His listeners/ Israel, and there are lessons for us.
    • He asks rhetorically: Who fears the Lord? and obeys? Yet still there is darkness all around ~ the Israelites would be in captivity and suffer much... But God issued a call to trust and rely!
    • Then in chapter 51 goes on to say Listen vs. 1 and 7. Pay attention, vs.4 and to pursue righteousness, seek the LORD...How?
    • By recalling God's words to them and His history with them, (or with me: consider my salvation and what I expect of God in the future. Remember the title that John Newton originally gave to Amazing Grace?: "Faith's Review and Expectation!" We must always remember, no matter the circumstances that God will keep His word and we must look to Him and rely on Him.
    • Secondly, we must embrace the same values that He embraces: See vs. 4-6
    • Law
    • *Justice* always remember that EVENTUALLY, all will be JUST, so pursue God relentlessly
    • Righteousness and
    • *Salvation* God's desire and plan is for salvation. Overall purpose for His Creation!
    • And lastly, Listen up! Do not fear, following God will not disappoint or fail you. To give up, or reject will open the door to the moth eating and grub destruction. In other words, God doesn't take my afflictions lightly.

  3. I love words. I love to write them, I love to read poetic, thoughtful, personal words. I rely more on what I remember He has DONE for me already, in the past, what I personally have known Him to do. things no-one but He could have orchestrated on my behalf. There I find my strength, promises kept.

  4. Great stuff, Sarah. You have a nice collection started. Give us updates if any other meaningful ideas come to your notice. It seems to mean more to us when it comes from someone currently in the crucible.
