build up your house

Proverbs 14:1 - The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.

As a Christian wife and mother, I subscribe to the fairly traditional roles of husband and wife as outlined in scripture.  In a nutshell, Dad works and brings home the paycheck, Mom runs the home and takes care of the kiddos*.  Mom is respectful to Dad as the head of the house, Dad is a loving and gentle servant-leader to Mom and the kids.

After reading this verse a couple of weeks ago I was really struck by a new idea; something I had thought before but I really felt this verse supported.

While it is the job of the husband to be the leader of the home, women have so much sway in the morale of the home.  You know that old saying, "If mama ain't happy, ain't no one happy"?  It's actually quite true.  As women we have so much influence over the spirit of our home.  Proverbs 14:1 says we can make the choice: build it up or tear it down.

I, for one, am completely uninterested in tearing my house down.  I want my husband to come home to a happy place and my son to be raised in a loving, patient, and forgiving environment.

Proverbs 24:3 - Through wisdom a house it built, and by understanding it is established.

James 1:5 - If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

I want to encourage you today to seek wisdom from the Lord on how to build up your house.  Is it by overlooking a fault?  Picking up a great book on marriage or parenting?  Reevaluating finances?  Changing your attitude?  As women we have a great responsibility to build up our homes and with God's wisdom, it can be done.

*Please note, I do not look down on women who work outside of the home.  I did so myself for several years.  I realize many families are not afforded the luxury of allowing Mom to work at home.  I also realize some women enjoy their careers.  The main idea here is that Dad is respected as head of the house, not so much whether or not Mom stays home.

Just a little funny for your day ;)
